Scott Dewey, owner of Retrieving Freedom brought 2 veterans with their 2 dogs to the meeting.
After a thunderous standing ovation for his work matching service dogs to returning veterans and autistic children, Scott thanked the retriever community for their involvement and help. One of the dogs on-hand was a previous Field Trial dog. This dog had just been re-united with his handler from the Iraq/Afghanistan war. He was sent to retrieve a bumper with the starting number for this year's event.

Dog #32 will start a combined 1st and 2nd series.
Dog #63 will start a combined 3rd and 4th series.

1. Handler on the mat for all marks.
2. Dog on the mat for all blinds.
3. Series 1 and 2 will be using rooster pheasants.
4. Each handler will be given a reasonable amount of time to review the test. If they have not called for
the bird the judges will say "time" and then call for the birds themselves.
5. The National Anthem will be played at 6:20 am, with test dogs in the holding blind.

The Labrador Female is FC Lock Five Mothers Keeper, "Keeper" Handler: Jamie Woodson
Before the meeting was adjourned a GPS coordinate was given to all in attendance to help locate the first series. It was strongly advised that everyone follow a caravan as there is poor reception in the area and you could end up 60 miles in the wrong direction.
The best address to use is:
S864 County Road H, Gilmanton, WI 54743
Good Luck was wished to all....
Retriever Advisory Committee Meeting....
At 2:04 pm the RAC meeting was called to order by John Russell.
Kate Simonds asked John Russell to stand in for her.
John introduced the members of the board, they were: John Goettl from the Mountain Time Zone, Ray Vreeland from the Eastern Time Zone, John Russell from the Central Time Zone, Doug Ljundgren is Vice President from AKC, Lisa Carrol who is the Manager for Performance Events, and Jerry Mann who is the Field Director of Sporting Events.
Doug, Lisa and Kate have worked this past year to overhaul how the committee is set-up. With the retirement of Nelson Sills, the opportunity arose to revise and adjust the committee. They will continue to have one member from each time zone, plus a chairman. They will initiate term limits of 8 years.
The criteria for how members selected are as follows:
1. They should be a 40+ point judge
2. They should have 20+ years of Field Trial Experience
3. They must have titled a dog
4. They must currently be an active handler
Ray Vreeland will be the new Eastern rep. as Kate Simonds moves to Chairman.
In the Central Time Zone Bob Kennon, has been the rep. for 29 years. He is retiring and will be replaced by John Russell. In the Western time zone, Bill Daley will resign and a new representative will be appointed.
When a rule change takes effect, an email is sent to the president and secretary of every retriever club.
There were two items that have previously been up for discussion and now have passed into law.
The first is the definition of Amateur Status.
The second is the prohibition of Layout Blinds.
A brief summary was given for each of the above mentioned rule changes.
The committee is in the infancy stage of discussion on the following two rule changes:
1. If a club holds 2 trials per year, then every other year, their 2nd trial of the year can have an Amateur
Stake with minor stakes, but no Open.
2. Limit Amateur Handlers to 3 dogs , per stake, at a clubs' discretion.
The above two topics are young and just beginning to have formal discussions.
There was quite a bit of activity on the floor as various thoughts were shared on the two new ideas.
The room seemed to follow the thought process that the mechanics of running a trial need improving versus the reduction in numbers. Emphasis was put on the job of Field Trial Marshal.
The meeting concluded at 2:56 pm

No See Em's.....???
One might respond,"What in the world is a No See Em?" Amongst the beautiful grandeur of the steep bluffs, abundant wetland & lush greenery there is an invisible bug. This bug is commonly referred to as a Gnat or Black Fly. A true annoyance to people and the dogs, not to mention birds, too.
According to the University of WI there is an explosion of these gnats this year. The reason for the explosion, exceptional habitat. The gnats congregate to areas where there is moving bodies of water living a life-span of only 3 weeks. With the states gallant efforts to make improvements in the water quality the more gnats will hatch as the bugs do not do well in polluted waters. There are over two dozen species of gnats common to the Mondovi area.
The gnats are hungry for blood, human and animal depending on the species. The carbon dioxide given off when we exhale and sweat is like a dinner bell to these nuisance bugs. Kudos to the State of Wisconsin for cleaning up our rivers, streams, and lakes! And don't fret about the gnats they are only here for a short while and it is natures way of letting us know we are preserving what once was. Be sure to bring your bug spray or invest in a bug net to get by and enjoy the other wildlife the clean water gives us.
